Distribution System Planning With Distributed Generation Application Using Teaching-Learning Based Optimization Algorithm

Application of distributed generation (DG) resources is one of the methods used in design and operation of distribution systems to improve power quality and reliability of load power supply of consumers. In this paper, a new method is proposed for the design and operation of distribution systems with DG resources application by finding the optimal sitting and sizing of generated power of DG with the aim of maximization of its benefits to costs. The benefits for DG are considered as system losses reduction, system reliability improvement and benefits from the sale electricity or from lack of purchase of electricity from the main system. In this paper to solve the optimal sitting and sizing problem to achieve maximum benefits of DG application, a teaching-learning based on optimization (TLBO) algorithm is proposed. Simulations are presented on a IEEE 69-bus test system to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The Results obtained from TLBO algorithm are compared with particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. Obtained results showed that the TLBO is a high power and fast method to find the optimal points of optimal sitting and sizing problem in comparison to PSO and application of DG resources reduced the system losses, costs and improved the system voltage profile.
